Did MrBeast really buy the NFL?

Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, stunned fans when he claimed on social media that he had “bought the NFL.” He made the announcement the day before the new season, saying he would put a YouTuber on each team. The posts on X and YouTube quickly gained millions of views and created a wave of speculation.

In reality, MrBeast did not buy America’s biggest sports league. The viral claim came from a collaboration between YouTube and the NFL to promote the new season. YouTube now holds global rights to stream certain games, starting with the Los Angeles Chargers against the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil. The season opener between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys followed soon after.

The NFL is not owned by one person or group. Instead, it is funded by 32 teams, each with its own owner or ownership group. The Green Bay Packers are the only exception, operating as a public nonprofit with community shareholders. League rules forbid corporate ownership, and one controlling owner must hold at least a third of each team. Commissioner Roger Goodell manages league operations on behalf of all 32 franchises.

Buying the NFL outright would be nearly impossible. Analysts estimate the combined value of all teams at around $228 billion. MrBeast, who has an estimated net worth of $1 billion, does not have anywhere close to the resources needed to attempt such a purchase.

Still, the stunt served its purpose. MrBeast, who commands 430 million YouTube subscribers and also hosts a show on Amazon Prime, thrives on bold attention-grabbing spectacles. The partnership with YouTube and the NFL generated excitement among younger fans while boosting promotion for the league’s new season.

The claim that MrBeast buys NFL may have been a joke, but it highlights how sports and digital entertainment now overlap. The NFL remains owned by its teams, yet the buzz proved how creative marketing can dominate headlines at the perfect moment.
