Jacob Kiplimo Cross Country history was written once again as the Ugandan star claimed senior men’s gold at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee. It was his third consecutive victory at this level, achieved in commanding fashion against a familiar rival.
Kiplimo crossed the line in 28:18 after delivering a devastating final lap. He finished 18 seconds clear of the field. Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi settled for silver once again, while Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo completed the podium with bronze.
The victory confirmed Kiplimo’s place among the greatest distance runners of his generation. It also capped a remarkable championship for Uganda.

Jacob Kiplimo Cross Country control followed a familiar pattern. He remained patient through the early stages. He stayed close to the leaders. He waited for the decisive moment.
When it came, no one could respond.
On the final lap, Kiplimo surged away with authority. His acceleration was decisive. He gained 18 seconds in a single lap. The move broke the race apart and removed all doubt.
Only three men before him had achieved three straight world cross-country titles. With this win, Kiplimo joined John Ngugi, Paul Tergat, and Kenenisa Bekele in that elite group.

Early pace sets the tone
The opening stages were fast and aggressive. USA’s Wesley Kiptoo went straight to the front. He completed the first lap in 5:39 and briefly stretched the field.
Uganda’s Dan Kibet and Australia’s Ky Robinson led the chase. However, the early move did not last. By the 3km mark, Kiptoo had been caught as the main contenders regrouped.
The leading pack began to take shape. Athletes from Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya filled the front positions.
Familiar rivals take control
At 4km, the race looked predictable. Ethiopian, Kenyan, and Ugandan runners dominated the top 12. Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku moved to the front. Uganda’s athletes remained well positioned.
Kiplimo ran with calm authority. He moved into fourth place and tracked the leaders closely. His presence was constant but measured.
Worku tried to change the rhythm approaching halfway. He injected a brief surge. For a moment, he created a small gap. Aregawi followed closely. Ebenyo stayed alert.
The effort faded quickly. By 6km, the group was back together.

Jacob Kiplimo Cross Country surge begins
Kiplimo edged to the front at the end of the third lap. The move was subtle. It was deliberate. It signaled intent.
A tight group followed. Ebenyo, Worku, and Aregawi stayed close. Biniam Mehary and Ishmael Kipkurui remained in contact behind them.
The fourth lap proved decisive. Kipkurui was the first to drop off. Worku followed soon after. The medal fight was reduced to four runners.
When the bell rang for the final lap, Mehary also lost touch. Only three remained.
Decisive final lap
Jacob Kiplimo Cross Country excellence was on full display. As soon as the final lap began, he attacked.
He opened an eight-second gap within the first kilometre. Aregawi tried to respond. Ebenyo followed. Neither could close the distance.
Stride by stride, Kiplimo increased his lead. His running was smooth. His pace relentless. By the finish, he had built an 18-second margin.
It was the largest winning gap in the senior men’s race since 2007.
Podium and team success
Aregawi crossed the line in 28:36 to claim silver. It was his fifth global silver medal and his third at the World Cross Country Championships.
Ebenyo finished third in 28:45. The bronze added another major achievement to his career.
Behind them, Worku, Kipkurui, and Mehary completed the top six. European champion Thierry Ndikumwenayo finished eighth. France’s Jimmy Gressier placed 15th.
Ethiopia claimed team gold. Kenya took silver. Uganda finished third.
Historic day for Uganda
Beyond individual success, the championships marked a milestone for Uganda. The team collected seven medals in total, including two gold.
It was the country’s best-ever medal haul at a World Cross Country Championships. Kiplimo led by example.
His leadership and performance set the tone. His victory will be remembered as one of Uganda’s greatest moments in distance running.
