AFCON 2025 has reached a historic stage. However, the biggest story is not only on the pitch. It is happening on the touchline.
For the first time in Africa Cup of Nations history, all four semifinal teams are coached by African managers. This guarantees that the trophy will be won by a homegrown coach.
It also marks the fourth consecutive AFCON title to be lifted under African coaching leadership.
A Defining Moment for African Football
This milestone is not accidental. Instead, it reflects a growing shift across the continent. African coaches are no longer seen as backup options. They are now trusted leaders and proven tacticians.
Their success is built on deep cultural understanding, strong player relationships, and tactical awareness suited to African football.
Semifinal Coaches Leading the Charge
The coaches guiding teams at this stage are:
- Walid Regragui – Morocco
- Hossam Hassan – Egypt
- Pape Thiaw – Senegal
- Eric Chelle – Nigeria
Each has the chance to extend Africa’s coaching dominance and strengthen belief in local expertise.
A Trend Rooted in Recent Success
Recent AFCON history supports this shift. Djamel Belmadi led Algeria to the 2019 title. Aliou Cissé guided Senegal to their first crown in 2021. Émerse Faé then delivered glory for Côte d’Ivoire in 2023.
These wins proved that African coaches can succeed at the highest level.
The Numbers Back It Up
Statistics from AFCON 2025 tell a clear story. Out of 24 teams, 15 were coached by Africans. Of those, 11 reached the knockout stage. More importantly, teams led by African coaches account for 75 percent of all wins so far.
These figures show more than results. They highlight unity, discipline, and adaptability under pressure.
History Within Reach
Only two men, Mahmoud El-Gohary and Stephen Keshi, have won AFCON as both players and coaches. Hossam Hassan could join that elite list if Egypt go all the way in 2025.
That possibility adds extra weight to this tournament.

A Clear Message from AFCON 2025
As the competition reaches its final phase, one message stands out. African coaches are firmly in control.
Whoever lifts the trophy will represent more than national pride. It will celebrate African football intelligence, leadership, and a growing legacy shaping the future of the game on the continent.
