Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has eased concerns over the fitness of teenage winger Rio Ngumoha following an injury scare during the FA Cup victory over Barnsley.

The 17-year-old was forced off in the second half of Liverpool’s 4–1 win against Barnsley at Anfield, briefly alarming supporters after another impressive first-team performance. Ngumoha had been one of the standout players before limping off with visible discomfort.

The incident occurred midway through the second half when Ngumoha chased a loose ball near the touchline and slipped on the astroturf surrounding the pitch. After receiving on-field treatment, the youngster was unable to continue and was substituted in the 73rd minute.

Given Liverpool’s recent struggles with injuries, the sight of the winger heading down the tunnel raised immediate concern. However, Slot moved quickly after the match to reassure fans and downplay fears of a serious setback.

Speaking after the game, Slot explained that the issue appeared to be nothing more than cramp as Ngumoha continues to adapt to the physical demands of senior football. He stressed that the club is carefully managing the teenager’s minutes as he builds endurance at first-team level.

Slot pointed out that Ngumoha had played similar durations in his previous appearances this season, completing 74 and 85 minutes in earlier starts. The 73 minutes against Barnsley, he said, fit comfortably within the workload the coaching staff currently expect from him.

The Liverpool boss also used the moment to highlight the step up in intensity between cup opposition and the Premier League. While Barnsley tested his side in spells, Slot noted that the physical demands of top-flight football are significantly higher.

He described the match as a valuable learning experience for Ngumoha, saying it offers a clear benchmark of the fitness levels required to play a full 90 minutes consistently at the highest level.

Liverpool will now continue to monitor Ngumoha’s condition ahead of upcoming fixtures, but there is growing confidence within the club that the youngster has avoided any serious injury. For now, the focus remains on his gradual development as one of the club’s most exciting emerging talents.
