A self-proclaimed native doctor is in trouble in Mali after AFCON 2025 ended in disappointment for the national team.
The man, identified as Mr. Sinayogo, was arrested after allegedly collecting about €33,500 (over 22 million CFA francs) from football supporters. He reportedly promised that his spiritual powers would guarantee Mali the AFCON 2025 trophy.
Mali’s campaign ended on Friday after a 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Senegal.
After the loss, angry fans reportedly gathered at Sinayogo’s home. Police intervened to prevent violence and later arrested him.
He was taken into custody on Saturday in Bamako. Witnesses say he is being held by the cybercrime division.
A government official confirmed the arrest. The official explained that charlatanism is a criminal offence under Malian law. Authorities said action was delayed during the tournament to avoid inflaming emotions.
Sinayogo was previously known as a political activist. Reports say he rebranded himself as a marabout shortly before AFCON 2025 began.
A social media content creator familiar with the case said he “reinvented himself overnight and made a fortune” from hopeful fans.
